![]() This even is true of some issues that were hotly debated at the time within Court circles, but of which little trace remains in any re cords after the decision was made. ![]() ![]() Even in treating much more recent episodes, such as the end of the New Order in Indonesia or the various changes that have overcome state policies in Vietnam or Burma, or the accommodations made or not made to International Monetary Fund proposals, we rarely have been taken into the counsels of those who moved - sometimes against great odds - to change the prevailing policies or to preserve the previous ones.Ģ This may seem strange to the social scientist accustomed to study great policy shifts in the West but, on reflection, even s/he must admit that darkness is much more common than light in such situations, and it is rare that we are afforded a glimpse behind the silken curtain.ģ Why should this be so? This has primarily to do with general, long-term principles of social and intellectual style: There are some things that one discusses in public, and other things which one does not. 1 In the customary treatment of political history in earlier Southeast Asia, it is rare that the historian is given any glimpses into the arguments that surely went on behind the scenes. ![]()
